Jacksonville, NC offers vast array of dining, shopping and recreation. Jacksonville was founded in 1842 and named for President Andrew Jackson. Because of easy shipping access Jacksonville grew quickly and became an economic epicenter for Onslow County. Commercial fishing and the agricultural trade of tobacco, peanuts, corn and pork helped Jacksonville grow and make a successful name for itself. When Jacksonville was chose for the site of "the Worlds Most Complete Amphibious Base," Camp Lejeune, in 1940, defense workers flooded the town causing the population to explode. The population grew again in 1990 when Camp Lejeune annexed parts of its population to the city. Today, the National Civic League recognizes Camp Lejeune as an "All American City" for the collaboration of its citizens, government, business and volunteer groups.
